The Story of Bunson Travel began sometime in December of 1948 when children returning home for Christmas were stranded in a cold Britain and risked not joining their parents in Kenya because the steamship passages were overbooked and regular air services were too expensive.
Something had to be done and done quickly! Bunson Travel Founders E.E Bundy and R. N Simpson (SON) decided to charter a 27-seater Viking aircraft to bring the children home. That marked the beginning of Bunson’s venture into the travel industry.
Bunson was started with the objective of facilitating the travel arrangements for students who were travelling abroad to further their studies during the colonial period. The name Bunson was derived from taking parts of the founders names and putting them together – (BUN) from Bundy and (SON) from Simpson.
From its humble beginning in the late 1940’s, Bunson has evolved and grown from a small travel agency into a regional leader in business travel management. The Bunson Travel Head Office was located in downtown Nairobi on Standard Street, on the ground floor of Pan Africa Insurance Building. This was their headquarters until 2012.
The Bunson Travel Group consisted of: Bunson Travel Services Limited, AA Travel (located in Westlands), Southern Cross Safaris, Bunson Travel Mombasa & Bunson Travel Seychelles. From the 70’s till the 90’s Allan Doig and Jullian Larby ran the company.
In the early 90’s Roger Sylvester became Managing Director/Owner of Bunson Travel. In 1998, Dabaly-Scott Bunson- the current MD- joined him. Together, in 1999 they celebrated a 50-year milestone for Bunson Travel. Julie went on to acquire sole ownership of Bunson Travel in 2009.
In 1999, Bunson Travel joined the Carlson Wagonlit Travel Global Network, as the exclusive partner in Kenya. They were one of the first African countries to join the CWT Global Partners Network. CWT is the world’s largest travel management company, with a global presence in more than 150 countries, in over 3000 locations
