The Kenya Airports Authorities (KAA) was last week forced to suspended new parking fees at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) following a public outcry.
The airport’s management had given an unprecedented one week notice for the new directive to take place effective April 15th, 2018. In the new fees structure, motorists spending under 20 minutes at the airport would be charged KES. 100 while those staying up to 2 hours would part with KES. 500.
The announcement did not go down well with travel agents who called for immediate revocation of the new fees. “We as regular users of the airport were never consulted before this decision was made”, said KATA CEO, Nicanor Sabula. KATA sent out a protest to KAA rejecting the new parking fees.
While suspending the decision, KAA said they were doing so to “give way for discussions by the stakeholders”.
With the new parking fees, cost of doing business was set to rise as travel agents and tour operators who operate daily at the airport regularly would be forced to dig deeper into their pockets to fund the additional costs in a very challenging business environment.
Whereas the Association understands why the Airports Authority would like to increase the parking fees, it is wrong to charge exorbitant fees indiscriminately without consulting key stakeholders.Back to news articles
